CLUB RULES OR CLUB CONSTITUTIONS ARE CRUCIAL TO THE DAY TO DAY RUNNING OF A CLUB

They ensure that all members are fully aware of how the club is structured and clearly outline the rules in which the club, its members and committee will operate.

A well-functioning club rules helps to prevent and resolve any internal disagreements or problems.

To support clubs to have a robust Club rules please click our Club Rules example that is attached at the bottom of this article. We highly recommend that you adopt this document if you are operating as a community sports club, however, you may need to review this if you are a company limited by guarantee or a Charity/CASC. Some clubs may wish to create their own set of rules bespoke to them, if you are going down this route please ensure you consider the following;

- Quorum for Committee Meetings and AGMs

- Minimum number of meetings per year

- Who will Chair committee meetings

Club Rule Importance

Your Clubs Rules should be easily accessible for all club members, we recommend storing them on your club’s website or alternatively sending them out at the start of each season to ensure that all members have access to them.

The rules of the club are critical; they determine how the officers and other management committee members of the club are appointed, and what powers they have. If the rules aren’t followed then potentially the committee members aren’t appointed lawfully, and so their actions may not be lawful either. This could result in the committee members being personally liable for the actions of the club.
